The mighty oak, known for its longevity and stunning canopy, received a bit more attention last “OAKtober,” a month dedicated to rebuild the oak population from the ground up.
Richmond Burton High School in Illinois secured a ComEd Green Region grant for $10,000 to kick-off McHenry County Conservation District’s 100 Oaks for 100 Years initiative to plant 100 oaks in one mid-October weekend.
Shawn Kingzette, district manager at Northwest Chicago R/C office, was asked to join the tree planting project after a McHenry County Conservation District employee heard Kingzette discuss the decline of oak trees in the area during his radio segment called “Tree Talk” on the Harvard Community radio station.Read More

Adopt-a-Tree Volunteers Bring Healthy Trees and Smiles to Homeowners May 12, 2015
For the third consecutive year, Davey’s Tampa Electric account crewmembers have volunteered to plant trees at the properties of local residents through the City of Temple Terrace and Tampa Electric’s Adopt-a-Tree program. They planted more than 40 trees in record time this year! Each spring, Temple Terrace homeowners have the opportunity to welcome home a new “family member” to their landscape—a healthy new tree.
Through the City of Temple Terrace and Tampa Electric’s annual Adopt-a-Tree program, homeowners from different neighborhoods each year may apply to receive a tree—city officials determine the species. During the week of National Arbor Day, “shovel sponsors” (Davey and Tampa Electric volunteers) follow county guidelines and restrictions to properly plant each tree.
“Volunteers complete the full planting, from digging the hole, to placing the tree and watering once it’s planted,” says Johnny Page, account manager for Davey’s Tampa Electric account.Read More
