Since 1994, Congress has designated the Martin Luther King, Jr., federal holiday as a national day of service. That is why the City of Orlando, Florida, teamed up with the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) and Davey Tree to create an annual day of service event called “Seedlings for Civil Rights.”
“It is important to give back and show appreciation to our clients,” says Mike Mittiga, operations manager, Davey utility services in Orlando, Florida. This year, Mittiga helped coordinate a service project on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The event consists of an entire day of volunteer opportunities to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy. Davey employees volunteered to “clean-up and spruce-up” Barker Park and surrounding neighborhoods.
“We have had a large presence in the Orlando metro area for several decades,” Mittiga says. “It’s great exposure for Davey and what we provide.”
Davey employees have volunteered at the Martin Luther King, Jr., event in Orlando for about 10 years. Mittiga says events like this are a great way to collaborate with clients they get to work with in the community.
